League Update 20
LJW Update – No. 20
There was a very disturbing documentary this week on BBC 2 about the Silicon Valley Online Slave Market. You can see it on BBC iPlayer if you missed it. Human beings are being sold online through apps on social media and the hosting of these apps is promoting an online slave market which is immoral, unethical and illegal by International Law.
The International Council of Jewish Women’s website has an article entitled Impacts of COVID-19 on Trafficking deploring the increased vulnerabilities caused by the worldwide Pandemic.
In 2014, Ruth Dearnley, CEO of Stop the Traffik, was our speaker at the ICJW Human Rights Day seminar. The League asked members to only buy chocolates and other produce that had the Fair Trade emblem. We were also asked to talk to the women who worked in nail salons to try to ascertain that they were working through choice and, in all spheres of life, to keep a look out for vulnerable people who were at risk of being used as slave labour.
Remember that as a League member you are also a member of the International Council of Jewish Women and if you look at www.icjw.org and you will find some very interesting articles and information.
It may not be everyone’s taste, but for those who love The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel there is a fabulous website which explores the making of Mrs. Maisel from ‘sketch to screen’ which includes costume design – she does wear some fabulous creations. Season 4 should be screened late 2020 to early 2021.
It was interesting to read that Kamala Harris, who has been nominated as the Democratic Party’s candidate for Vice President in the USA elections is better known as “Momala” by her step-children from her Jewish husband’s first marriage.

If you have a favourite recipe which isn’t a family secret, please share it with us. Here is one of mine…………….
The best ever homemade pickled cucumber – make it today and it will keep in the fridge until eaten. No more scum once the jar has been opened.
Boil the following ingredients for 5 minutes –
1 cup of white wine vinegar
2 cups of water
1 tablespoon salt
2 tablespoons sugar
2 dashes of white pepper
1 large bay leaf
Big pinch of mixed spices
A few black peppercorns
Slice cucumber as thin or as thick as you like and put into a container together with a couple of garlic cloves halved. Pour over hot liquid and ingredients. Once cool, put in fridge preferably overnight and enjoy. The next time you make this recipe, and you will, adjust garlic to your own taste.
At this time, please note that emails will only be dealt with on Tuesday and Thursday.
Keep Safe and Shabbat Shalom
